How Chanel No. 5 Became a Necklace

In 1920, following the successful launch of her couture house in Biarritz, France, and her subsequent move to Paris’s Rue Cambon, where she opened her flagship boutique, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel decided to create her first fragrance. She commissioned the French Russian perfumer Ernest Beaux to develop “a woman’s perfume, with a woman’s scent” — which, unlike most single-note options of the era, had a bold floral composition. Months later, he presented Chanel with an array of aromatic vials, and she chose the one labeled five. The bottle was topped with a square glass stopper with two interlocking sans-serif C’s, marking the debut of Chanel’s now-iconic logo. In 1924, the stopper was redesigned as a bevel-cut octagon, but it has otherwise remained largely the same for the past century.

Kéré’s Berlin-based firm says the building’s top-heavy appearance was inspired by the palaver tree, which traditionally served as a meeting place. Designed for developer s2e Technologies by US architecture firm Gensler, the four circular residential structures can accommodate a combined 84 households. But it is perhaps Bjarke Ingels, founder of Danish design firm BIG, that has had the greatest impact on the city’s once modest skyline. The first restored sections are set to be ready in time for this summer’s Paris Olympics. Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta and local practice Blight Rayner — who together beat more than 20 entries in an international competition — say that the design was inspired by the flow of the Brisbane River.

She’s “The Hesitant Fiancée,” the eponymous subject of the painter Auguste Toulmouche’s 1866 painting. Toulmouche wasn’t a feminist painter, but his work speaks to women todayToulmouche painted scenes of elegant, wealthy French women in domestic settings, often chronicling their romantic exploits. The seated woman in "The Hesitant Fiancée" has inspired TikTok users to create memes based on their own eye roll-worthy moments when they had to swallow their anger. Auguste Toulmouche/From WikipediaWhile Toulmouche was “by no means a painter of feminist art,” Brown said, the women in his paintings are interpreted today as slyly subversive. “Read as a narrative that unfolds across the two works, it looks like the young woman from ‘Forbidden Fruit’ knows what’s about to happen to her.”‘The Hesitant Fiancée’ is courting TikTok fansThe revival of “The Hesitant Fiancée” has been centuries in the making.

[1/5] San Francisco drag queen Khmera Rouge performs onstage during the GAYPEC event hosted at Beaux Night Club in the Castro District of San Francisco, California, U.S., November 15, 2023. San Francisco is known for its large and politically active LGBTQ population, and its myriad gay bars, including the venue for Wednesday's event, Beaux. Most at the event, as it turned out, were not APEC delegates. Stephanie Wong and Khoa Tran, founders of San Francisco tech startup reverylab.com, said they came because they were curious -- and they thought it would offer networking opportunities. Mark Anthony Catalan, a university student and a volunteer at the APEC summit, said he was sceptical.

Paris CNN —The Moomin characters may be internationally famous, but a new exhibition in Paris shows a lesser-known side to the Finnish artist who created them. The show takes an intimate look into the life of Tove Jansson, both as a prolific artist and an advocate for female independence. Courtesy The Community and Moomin Characters Ltd. Using illustrations, cartoons, photography, music, writings and letters, the exhibition shows Jansson as a multifaceted character who could — and did — make art out of almost anything. PARIS (AP) — Valentino took a sentimental journey to Les Beaux-Arts this Sunday, revisiting the prestigious Parisian art school where its founder, Valentino Garavani, was once a student. Dive into the highlights of this Spring/Summer 2024 ready-to-wear collections from Paris, including the end of an era at Alexander McQueen as its lauded designer Sarah Burton presented her final show. Strategically positioned boxes filled with rocks, sand, and earth transformed into platforms for a troupe of sinewy, scantily clad contemporary dancers. Her task had always been titanic – to step into shoes left empty by the enigmatic genius of Lee Alexander McQueen. From the profound artistry of Kate Middleton’s wedding gown – a garment that transcended royal expectations – to her final collection’s poignant motifs, Burton proved her mettle time and again.

NEW YORK (AP) — A dozen years ago, Barkley L. Hendricks, the pioneering portrait artist known for vivid, stylish paintings of Black men and women, stood outside the Frick Collection in Manhattan, known for its works by European Old Masters. Still, curators say, he'd likely have never imagined that in 2023, he’d be the first artist of color to have a solo show at the 88-year-old Frick. What is more unusual is that a museum focusing on the 14th through 19th centuries would devote a show to a contemporary portraitist like Hendricks. His sunglasses reflect the buildings outside Hendricks' studio, and even contain a tiny reflection of the artist himself. “Slick” features the artist in a white suit against a white background, wearing a cap of African design.

The palatial Beaux-Arts library on Fifth Avenue guarded by a pair of stone lions was not where Farrah Denson wanted to be when she was a teenager growing up on the Upper West Side. She felt like she had to be on her best behavior and not touch anything. And she dreaded climbing all the steps to the main entrance. “I felt like I was going to a courthouse,” said Ms. Denson, now 34, who lives in Jersey City. “It wasn’t a place you’d want to hang out in.”Today, the New York Public Library’s celebrated research library — officially known as the Stephen A. Schwarzman building — is still as imposing as ever, set in its elegant lot in the middle of the skyscrapers of Midtown Manhattan, but it has become a far more welcoming place.

Hundreds of Google employees signed a petition opposing a drag show the company sponsored for Pride. Google has since distanced itself from the event, CNBC reported. Google distanced itself from a Pride Month drag show it had sponsored shortly after some employees started a petition claiming it was offensive to Christian staff, CNBC reported. Google's distancing from the drag performance comes as a number of companies have clashed with customers or employees over LGBTQ+ and Pride Month initiatives. And Starbucks workers said that the company wouldn't let them decorate their stores for Pride, prompting some staff to go on strike.

Google is distancing itself from a drag performance it planned as the closing event for Pride month after a group of employees circulated an internal petition opposing it, claiming religious discrimination. Each year, Google sponsors a series of Pride events in San Francisco and other locations for employees and the public. A few hundred employees signed the petition opposing the drag performance, claiming it sexualizes and disrespects Christian co-workers, and accused Google of religious discrimination, according to the petition viewed by CNBC. That includes a flurry of legislative proposals backed by GOP governors taking aim at drag events. San Francisco venues host Pride events every June, which is recognized as Pride month, and those events commonly include drag shows of various stage acts.

REUTERS/Denis BalibousePARIS, Dec 9 (Reuters) - France's state-controlled utility EDF said on Friday three of its nuclear reactors were "ramping up" production after repairs, while a power outage tested nerves in Paris and cold weather added to the strain on supplies across Europe. EDF (EDF.PA) is racing to get nuclear reactors back online following work to tackle corrosion problems as the whole of Europe struggles to cope with the impact on its energy supplies of the Ukraine war. Compounding the impact of disrupted energy imports from Russia, a record number of outages at EDF's 56-strong nuclear fleet has taken France's nuclear output to a 30-year low, increasing the country's reliance on other country's depleted energy reserves. Later on Friday, EDF Chief Executive Luc Remont and French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire are due to hold a news conference at a nuclear site. POWER CUTSGrid operator RTE, however, says the country's power supplies will be stretched even if EDF manages to stick to its repair schedule, and partial load-shedding measures cannot be ruled out this winter on cold days.
